Officials ask residents to help name new high school

The school board is asking any full-time resident of the Big Sky community, of any age, to submit name suggestions for the new high school.

“A lot of work remains before a new high school in Big Sky can open its doors,” said Krista Boersma, chair of the Ophir School Board's public relations committee, “but we want to get started by asking the community to help with suggestions for a name and a mascot.”

The high school, to be in the first new secondary district established in Montana in 45 years, is scheduled to open in the fall of 2009. The Ophir K-8 School Board will officially become a K-12 board in July this year.

Any full-time resident of the community, of any age, is invited to participate and submit an entry form. Entry forms will be available on the Ophir website - www.ophirschool.org, at the Big Sky Community Library, and at the school's office beginning March 14. Entries will be closed March 28. Participants will be able to submit an entry either over the internet or by filling out a form and returning it to the school.

“Ophir High School and Big Sky High School will certainly be considered as names,” said Boersma “but we want to be open to all ideas at this point. We would like to select a name and a mascot which reflect the values and the environment of our community.”

The public relations committee will review all entries and, with School Board oversight, select three to five for consideration. Members of the public outreach committee include chair Krista Boersma, Noelle Child, Jon Holtzman and Laura Michel.

The selected entries will be published in full in the local newspapers by April 4, and members of the community will be asked to indicate their favorites by submitting a signed recommendation by no later than April 11.

The School Board, which has the final responsibility for selecting the school's name and mascot, will officially announce the name as soon as it reviews community recommendations.
