Ophir Miners girls basketball team racking up the wins
The middle school girls basketball season is now underway, and student interest in the sport is high. This year two teams represent the Ophir Lady Miners, with 20 girls on the 5/6th grade team and 15 on the 7/8th grade team.
The 5/6th grade girls, coached by Heather Morris and Jenny Wilcynski, had a 5/6 record as of January 23. Coach Morris is confident the young players will up that record, noting that they’re on a definite up-tick.
The 7/8th grade squad, led by returning starters and team captains Jessica Bough and Maddie Cone, currently leads the league standings with an 8-0 record. Known for their swarming full court press and zone defense, the Lady Miners have held opponents to less than five points in the first half in five of the eight games. Newcomers Katrina Lang and Jaden Spence join Kate King, Josie Wilcynski and Avery Dickerson as anchors on the defense end of the court. The girls are guided by head coach Loren Bough.
Cheer on the 5/6th grade Lady Miners during their February 5 for a home game against St. Mary’s, and both the 5/6th and 7/8th grade girls on February 12 against West Yellowstone. The younger team takes the court at 4 p.m. followed by the older girls at 5 p.m.
